About Co-operative Education
Bring your learning experience to the next level. Supplement your classroom learning experience while earning grade 11 or 12 credits. Gain valuable work experience and have an opportunity to explore a career of your choice regardless of your post secondary destination: university, college, apprenticeship or work. There is no limit to the number of credits a student earns through Cooperative Education as long as they have the related link subject. Some of these credits may also be used as the compulsory credits for Group 1, Group 2 or Group 3. Students normally undertake either a semester or full year program for either half or full days.
Admission Requirements:
- Must take a related course concurrently or prior to Co-op.
- Must have a commitment to the program and the maturity to handle school curriculum and workplace expectations.
- Must complete an application package including three teacher references.
- Complete an interview with the Community Based Education teacher.
There is a $10 course fee for program related, individualized materials. See the Co-operative Education Teacher for an application package.
Course Codes at SLSS:
COP3X - Grade 11, 2 or 4 credits
COP4X4 - Grade 12, 2 or 4credits

OYAP
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is a specialized program that enables students to meet diploma requirements while participating in an occupation that requires apprenticeship training. This one or two year program provides opportunities in both regulated and non-regulated skilled trades while earning their high school diploma. Students also earn apprenticeship competencies with the potential for wages and full time employment after graduation.
Some of the skilled trades currently available include: Automotive Service Technician, Cook, Baker, Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECE), Tool and Die Maker, Welder, Plumber, Carpenter, Electrician, Hairstylist and many more. Please see the Co-op Teacher for a complete list of all the trades offered through OYAP.
Admission Requirements:
- must be 16 years of age by December 31st of their Grade 11 year
- successfully completed 16 credits by the end of Grade 10
- competent in mathematics, science and communication
- possesses the skills/aptitudes required by the chosen trades
- demonstrates good attendance record and a positive attitude
- three teacher references with completed application package
- completed interview with the Community Based Education Teacher

International Co-op
Spend 14 weeks of second semester (March – June) in Ecuador, speaking Spanish and totally immersed in the Ecuadorian culture. International Cooperative Education combines cross-cultural living with international community service work experience. Students live with host families and work on agricultural, community development, educational, environmental, local business or social work projects.
Earn six high school credits! This program is excellent preparation for students interested in careers in cultural relations, education, environmental studies, foreign services, health sciences, international business and development, social work and more.
Course package includes the following 6 credits: CGU4U, IDP4U, CPW4U, LWS_C, IDP4UC- 2 credits. Available for grade 11, 12 students.
Admission Requirements:
- minimum 1 credit in Spanish (LWSBD or higher)
- one grade 11 “U” or “M” course in English, Canadian and World Studies or Social Sciences and Humanities
- students must be 16 years of age at time of departure.

Militia Co-op
Offered in second semester for a full day placement. See the Co-op Department for more details. Students work on agricultural, community development, educational, environmental, local business or social work projects. This program is a partnership with the Canadian Armed Forces.
